I have decided to move my blog (again) back to another blogging site. I will be trying to export my content from here to the new site – fingers crossed.

Please come by and have a look at my blog at its new location!

Crochet Motifs

The weather here has turned a little bit cooler which has made me think about making some scarfs and jackets or coats.

Usually it is pretty warm here so I get  much taken by surprise  a bit when it does start cooling down!

I love crochet and I love the idea of using crochet motifs. I was surfing the web just before and noticed this site:

and immediately fell in love with these paisley motifs which the blog author saw in a book.

I would love to make them as I love paisley designs.

Maybe I should try to make some?

Ooh! I just read Patti’s post more carefully and noticed that she offers a free PDF with instructions as to how to make the above mentioned paisley motifs. Must have a go now!

All About April – Birthstone – Part One

The birthstone for April is the Diamond.

The sizzling, lovely beauty of diamonds.

Big ones. Small ones.

Different colored ones.

Popular gemstones in engagement rings.

A symbol of love & commitment.

We all know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend!

What does the name “diamond” mean?

It comes from the Greek word adamas which means invincible, unbreakable, unalterable (depending on which source you read).

With out being too techy here:

On the Moh’s scale diamonds are the hardest of the natural gemstones.

They are 10 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness.

This means that diamonds are so hard that the only material that can scratch a diamond – is a diamond!

They are made from carbon.

They are typically classified by the four Cs:

And speaking of carats…

“I never worry about diets.  The only carrots that interest me are the number of carats in a diamond”  ~ Mae West

More to follow about diamonds in Part Two

Something about sequins

I love sequins. I remember seeing dance costumes when I was a child and looking in wonder at the beautiful patterns made by sequins sewn onto fabric.

A couple of years ago I dabbled with sequins, reading through books, practising some of the patterns. Using the sequins, sometimes with tiny seed beads, I made some stunning embellishments.  Well I thought so : )  Using very simple techniques! They were only samples, and sadly, I am not sure if I still have them with me.  Those practice sessions have stayed in the back of my mind and I found recently I just had to go my local craft store and stock up on supplies.

What might have been behind this as well as I recently read an item about the re-make of the movie, The Great Gatsby. I’m not sure where I read it so unfortunately I can’t give credit to the source. The item mentioned the beautiful fashions of the twenties and whether the release of the movie would influence fashions – clothing and accessories created using feathers, sequins, beads and more..

Here are some photos of my first effort.

I have hand stitched the silver sequins with silver-lined Delicas onto black felt (I love sewing on felt!). Each petal has been sewn separately. With the centre I used black felt and for additional detail I sewed white net on the back, with more sequins, of course! I added a little pleat in the net so it wouldn’t sit too flat.

At night the sequins look stunning!
